"It" 1927 silent film
on: February 27, 2015, 10:19:29 PM
Hi all,
I just finished watching this movie. This short film has 72 minutes of continuous piano which I found quite enjoyable.
Does anyone know the "style" of this kind of music? Can anyone recommend another one of these silent film gems with noteworthy piano?
If you decide to watch this, see if you can spot Gary Cooper.
Thank you, Joe.

Dover publish a collection called "
Sounds for the Silents
", which is a collection of the music actually used by pianists in movie theatres at the time. You may find it enlightening, and just plain fun.
Silent films were just that, with the music provided by a pianist (sometimes an organist) live in the theatre. Modern renditions of them just add a version of that in as a soundtrack.

Most silent films released on DVD with a soundtrack aren't necessarily the way it was always played.
In a local historical theater, they show 1929's Phantom of the Opera with live organ music, the musician uses lots of classical piano selections for the incidental music.
-I arranged an hour of Final Fantasy music which goes along with the scenes for that same movie /\ It makes an entertaining performance and the music goes along really well!
