Recording with my iphone
on: March 22, 2015, 01:01:50 AM
I'd like to record my playing to asses my playing and perhaps to make a post to the audition room. But I have a lot of questions.  If I use my iphone, will the audio quality be good enough?  Where should I put the iphone?  On top of the piano? On the bench?  I'd prefer video, so for this will I need a tripod?  Although I'm just an amateur pianist, I work at a university which has a music department, and I sometimes play in their practice rooms.  While playing there today, watching my fingers, I had the thought that I could perhaps somehow attach the iphone to a headband and record exactly what I was seeing.

At home I have an upright piano and a recently purchased Yamaha P105 digital piano.  I haven't yet explored all the features of the P105 but I think I could use that to record audio directly to my computer.  Of course that wouldn't be a video recording, but maybe that's what I should do?  What do you think?  What do you recommend?

I recorded a bit with my iPhone, and this was the best I could get:

It's not great by any means, aside from the awful performance (that piano not helping; stiff action proved nearly impossible to get a delicate sound out of). I'd strongly recommend getting a decent USB mic and record using audacity. Then you can export it and convert the audacity project file into a standard sound file, and upload it here. Slightly tedious but there it is..

Search around Youtube for iPhone recordings.  It will give you an idea of what to expect.

There are excellent portable recorders available for much less then the cost of an iPhone.  Many of them are designed specifically for music recording.  You are likely to upgrade your phone a few times before you need to replace one of these.

Some examples:

There are also video recorders designed for music applications.  Think the above portable music recorder + video.
