Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 Arrangement
on: March 31, 2015, 07:25:01 PM
Hello everyone, first time posting here.

So, in a search for a good score for the concerto, since I have one but its a verry bad copy of it, I came across this arrangement of Richard Keans of the first movement of the Rachmaninov 3.

Honestly I allways wondered if theres a cleaner arrangement for the concerto, never found one, though came across this version, I need some thoughts about it, maybe someone that has the original version to compare it to this one and maybe tell me what they think about it before jumping in to it.

Thanks in advance.

This is the link to the score:

Thanks, even though I am looking for second opinion on it :)

I don't think anyone with a half decent background would recommend that score (basically a re-arrangement). It essentially discourages any pianistic understanding of the music (it's rachmaninov, he's certainly a lot outside of being pianistic, but then you put that element into his music and you have a miracle). It took me 1 minute to find a blatant error, can't imagine how many i'd find in ten minutes of looking. And that he changes things like an A flat into a G sharp in the score is ridiculous, for lack of a better word. And the orchestra part is removed entirely.

Go to imslp as posted above. Who recommended this "arrangement" to you? And if you considered learning from this, your lack of understanding suggests the music is too advanced for you.

Hi,

i've got this one:

Concerto no. 3 pour piano op. 30, deux pianos / S. Rachmaninoff
Publication [S.l.] : A. Gutheil
Publication London : Boosey & Hawkes , c1947
Physical description 1 score (79 p.) ; 32 cm
Concerto no. 3 op. 30, two pianos
Note Acc. arr. for second piano

There's additional written info in it: "Copyright 1910 by A. Gutheil, for all countries. Copyright assigned 1947 to Boosey & Hawkes, Inc., New York, U.S.A."

The Plate number says: B. & H. 16326.

So it may be only a "refreshment" of the 1910 Gutheil-Version which is on IMSLP.-
__

But I don't know how people like this (my 1947) version. I don't look into it very often. Got it as present in 1991 from my Mum.

Cordially, 8_octaves!

"Never be afraid to play before an artist.
The artist listens for that which is well done,
the person who knows nothing listens for the faults." (T. Carreño, quoting her 2nd teacher, Gottschalk.)

That is the ugliest, most non-sensical "arrangement" I've ever seen.  Couldn't even look at it for more than a minute.  Throw it in the trash, burn it, and bury the remains.

Just pick up the modern Boosey & Hawkes edition - it has everything you need. Not sure if you're looking for an "arrangement" for one piano....if you are, I don't think a good one could possibly exist.  There are too many notes!

Now that i think of it, i feel downright sorry for the person responsible for that arranged it. Imagine the time that went into a task that's much much worse than meaningless. He'd be better off sitting in a field and giving each blade of grass an individual pet name. At least he wouldn't damage a creation of a genius and guide inept aspiring pianists off a cliff.

Reminds me of that time a while ago i was in the university library, someone, who i also feel sorry for and don't know (for everyone's benefit, since they probably weren't sane) wrote the fingerings in a score of Prokofiev's 2nd piano concerto. They put fingering on every single note. Not a single note didn't have something penciled in for it. Imagine what the Scherzo looked like....

-And THAT reminds me when I was about 11 years old and learned Beethovens 5th symphony (mov1) by ear from an old casetterecorder (Glenn Gold recording). I worked with this every singel day for months.  Our piano was so untuned (or the tape went on wrong speed?)  that I played it in d-minor (once for an big audience...OMG).   :P

-I can still play it...in d-minor :P
