repertoire (Liszt) for a capable student.

I know some of my way around with a lot of what Liszt put out, but hardly a specialist, and don't know it all. I'm trying to determine some repertoire options for a student that has made a strong display of capability and interest in Liszt's music.

The Liebestraume is something he can play with technical command, he recently performed Chopin's 2nd scherzo at an event with incredible skill, and he's now getting his way through the 2nd Liszt rhapsody, the only trouble is it's lengthy.

I'm wondering if there's any very attractive, rewarding and convincing Liszt at that level without the length of the Rhapsody. Something like un sospiro. Maybe a transcription even.

The whole point is to find something that sustains his interest and allows excellent returns on his effort, being fairly young I see the situation as possibly fragile in a sense.

"Never be afraid to play before an artist.
The artist listens for that which is well done,
the person who knows nothing listens for the faults." (T. Carreño, quoting her 2nd teacher, Gottschalk.)

Transcriptions -
(interesting, fun, whilst not being outrageously difficult)
Isolde's Liebestod
Fantasy on themes from Rienzi
Gounod - Faust Waltz

Last one is probably about the same length as the HR2, but not as physical.

I didn't know about the czardas macabre. Might be something i look after at a later date, but i think it'd be too much for this guy.

Same with the Wagner transcriptions i'm afraid, i know of them to a certain degree.

The sonnets or valse oubliee was more the neighborhood i was thinking. The rhapsody i feel is borderline too big.

But thanks for the suggestions so far.

Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 11 (very beautiful, short, and not too difficult--although since he just completed No. 2, it might be a little too soon)

Transcription of Verdi's Rigoletto (fast scales and arpeggios but also not too difficult)

Gnomenreigen S. 145 (very fun)

Liszt-Paganini Etude No. 2 (La Campanella is also an option but I don't know if he would manage)

Transcendental Etude No. 1, 6, 9, 10 (6, 9, 10 may be a little too difficult... 1 might be too easy considering his completion of Chopin's Scherzo #2)

I personally think Valsee Oubliée is a great option.
