Upright in a Condo
on: April 03, 2015, 09:34:51 PM
Hello everyone, I've been playing for ~6 months on a digital (Yamaha DGX-650) and wanted to move onto a Yamaha U3. I live in a condo where I share only one wall, no upstairs or downstairs neighbors. The piano would be placed in the living room on the unshared wall. I also have wood floors and the previous owner placed double-thick drywall in the living room walls.
How can I make this set-up as neighbor friendly as possible?

If your soundboard is not facing into a shared wall, you should be fine. Though it may work to put some soundproofing foam up on the shared wall, and around the piano.

It should be fine, as long as you are aware of the specific rules of the house. A U3 can be quite loud and the sound may well transfer far in a building depending on how it is build. So you need to know when you are allowed to play in case someone feels like complaining.

If you can, get the U3 fitted with the SH silent system. Then you can play acoustic at times the neighbours accept and silent at any time of the day or night.

I also live in a condo and have a grand. The quiet hours are from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am. However, to be considerate I do not play the acoustic piano until 9:00 in the morning and no later than 10:00 at night. It is on an outside wall but I do have someone living upstairs. I use my digital when I want to play later. I have not had any complaints.
