How can I learn to play like this...
on: April 12, 2015, 07:30:42 AM
So for a long time I've wanted to learn to play this style of piano, I have no idea where to start. I'm not the best at improv and jazz, any guidance?
Been playing for 16 years off and on, I'm quite confident and willing to take on any difficulty.

it sounds like new age--smooth jazz. a lot of sus2 chords with a Bruce Hornsby type hammer on and some cocktail piano riffs if you watch a tutorial on how to play like Bruce or how to play cocktail piano and you will hear what i mean lots of triads--common in pop music.
to learn to play in this style means you are able to apply those riffs and cells to any song. So once you learn them you have to incorporate them into your playing. we did an exercise in school where we used riffs we had learned to arrange tunes like--mary had a little lamb, etc. If you have a decent grasp of triads and dom7 chords and basic harmony--your good to go
that should get you started anyway.
or you can just find a transcription of the tune and learn to play it exactly as it's written... but then you just know another song.
