Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 (third movement)
on: April 20, 2015, 03:13:28 AM
Please give me your honest thoughts on this performance (done in a classroom situation without a second piano or orchestra). I already have a strong idea as to what was done well and what was terrible about it, but before sharing my thoughts I'd like to hear your opinion.

Very nice playing!  :)
There are some minor rhythmical imbalance and I would play it whith more focus on dynamics and articulation. Anyway, very good playing!  :D

This is the kind of post that inspires me (and hopefully others) to challenge myself. Thank you very much for sharing. Sorry MS has 142 replies. Shame on us.

I thought overall it sounded really good! I don't care for nitpicking (except for my own playing of course).

But p_p, are you sure you aren't playing this much too fast? Have you tried to contact Mr. Rachmaninoff for direct advice?  ;)

Thanks guys!

@stevensk: I totally agree with you - there are a few sections where I need a stronger rhythmic foundation. And yes there are times throughout where I need better articulation. I'm now using less pedal in certain sections to achieve this sound, really glad you picked it up.

@liszt1022: Thanks! It means a lot to me, that you found it inspiring.

@outin: Personally I'm all about nitpicking and am very critical of my playing. I listen back to it and while I'm happy overall, there are lots of little things here and there I can improve on. There are some great sections in my playing but some parts I played terribly - these need immediate attention. I don't think it's too fast, have a listen to some recordings. But it is true that I'm not steady enough in some places, such as the start.

Oops! I confused you with someone else, because I don't see the names completely in my browser. So forget about what I wrote after the first sentence, it was not written seriously. The tempo is fine :)

I seem to come to this sort of threads for my own daily dose of insecurity..

Well played by OP of course, no real useful advice from me on my part but there is a great masterclass on this concerto by Bolet on youtube that OP can have a look at
...now to get some practicing done...

Thanks for the link to the masterclass! Don't think for a moment that I don't go through my moments of uncertainty and insecurity, we all have moments where we doubt ourselves. It's how we mentally work through these moments that matters.
