I think I'm missing the technique...?
on: April 25, 2015, 05:24:46 PM
Hello, I've been practicing Czerny Op.821 No.118 for quite a while now and it has definitely grown on me. But it feels very difficult to me and it seems like I'm using the wrong hand position... for example, the last chord in the second last measure is fairly easy to play alone, but the transition from the chord prior to that and the chord following feels almost impossible at the indicated tempo (molto vivace)... and it just seems like that I'm playing the whole thing in an upside down manner. Any tips or techniques?

I've never played it. The advice my teacher gives me for rapid chord changes like that one is 1) be sure to move your arm, don't reach with the fingers 2)as soon as you lift off from the first chord your fingers should be positioning themselves in the relative positions required to play the next chord - don't wait til your hand is in the right place to orient the fingers. Try doing it slowly enough that you can see the difference between using your arm to move your hand and only then getting your fingers organized versus organizing your fingers while your arm/hand is moving to the new chord. Once that seems clear to you, speed up.

Are you sitting too low? Are your wrists straight with the forearm? If both are 'yes', you're doing it wrong. Sit higher, raise the wrist.
