Dominant Seventh Arpeggios
on: April 27, 2015, 11:47:31 AM
I have trouble speeding up my dominant seventh arpeggios. I can do moderato at best. Whenever I try to do it, my arms feel tense afterwards. I also play notes, especially on the way down. I use all fingers for these arpeggios, btw. Would anyone of you know a proper technique or better fingering for this? Thanks!

I don't know if this will help, but when I was working on dominant seventh arpeggios I noticed that I had a tendency to hold my hand as though as was supposed to play the chord as a block chord. It's a bit easier to relax, I think, if you just play the notes one after the other, without holding your hand in a position to cover the entire chord all at once. Then you just move through the arpeggio by moving your arm up and down the keyboard and there's less tendency for your hand to feel cramped and tight.

After more observation, I think the tension is coming from extended computer use and long writing period and not from piano playing.
I should give my hands a rest.
Yes, I practice chord blocks too before moving to arpeggios. I will try what you recommended. I also need a teacher to help me. I only have a total of less than a year of sporadic lessons since 2005. Not good at all. My teacher already retired. I hope to find a new one this year.
Oh, I mean I miss notes on the way down. Where is the edit/modify button for the OP, btw?
