liszt suggestions, similar to 'Romance'?
on: May 02, 2015, 07:20:22 PM
I am in love with Liszt 'Romance' and would appreciate other suggestions in the same style, and approximately the same difficulty also written by Liszt... I realize 'difficulty' is very subjective, so all suggestions would be welcome if you are concerned about a true match.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hi Dogperson,

The piece linked below presents the melodic content used for Liszt's Ballade No. 1 and was composed in the same year as the Ballade No. 1 [1845].

Linked below is the (very difficult) first Ballade.  Sorry to choose a piano roll, although I do like the sensibility of what is heard here.  You'll hear those themes begin to emerge not far into the music.

I hope this helps!

Mvh,
Michael

This is rarely performed early early Liszt. But it is in my opinions of the loveliest delicate themes he composed.  If one did not know who it was not by, one could easily think it is Schubert. And I love dust about it.  Should really be appreciated and learned played more

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if the Romance S. 169 is a mistitled Funeral Elegy, or perhaps part of the title was left off - maybe it is supposed to be Death of a Romance.

p.s. - It doesn't exactly bring to mind thoughts of Liszt and Countess Marie d'Agoult in their travels, such as here:

The "Romance" S. 169 was composed in 1848.  Liszt met Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein in 1847.  But maybe things had not properly heated up yet between the two of them. ;)

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions.  Romance' was  written based on a poem by caoline Pavloff;  i have posted the source and history of this work  in another thread.

A really simple piece that I like to couple with the Romance is the Sonetto del Petrarca 123.
Also, not but Liszt but very much akin to the Romance is Chopin Nocturne Op.72. It's even in the same key.

Hi dogperson,

You are quite right about this on a scholarship basis.  The question I ask is: did Liszt live out the experiences described in the poem, and of what was Liszt really emoting upon?

Liszt's music at times draws richly upon his life experiences when it is not focused on thoughts of the other world, and yet maybe all such things are of another world and are superimposed here without it being immediately apparent to the eyes with which we all are born, and perhaps Liszt was emoting upon such an awareness and as such of which he had been enabled to possess?

Mvh,
Michael
