Hi Everyone,

Giovanni Bellucci seems to have a unique ability to make the Mozart-Liszt transcriptions really come alive, as here:

&index=17

And his performance here of the Verdi-Liszt Miserere aus Trovatore is extraordinary:

Hi Everyone,

Giovanni Bellucci ...

... his performance here of the Verdi-Liszt Miserere aus Trovatore is extraordinary:

Yes, interesting and exciting performance with technique to spare. I know this work well. The rhythmic distortion of the melody in the two bars from 5.01 is very strange though!

I really like his performances of paraphrases on La Sonnambula (both Liszt and Thalberg) -

Liszt (part 1, makes Leslie Howard look like a child):

Thalberg (slightly truncated, unfortunately):

Do like his Thalberg. A bit to fast for me. The trills also need to be quiter.

Out of curiosity, Thal, what do you think of rival recordings of the Thalberg Sonnambula? Iirc it's one of the better Nicolosi ones; there is a decent live performance by Tomas Kameniak on YT but the sound quality is poor. As with all Thalberg paraphrases, I think Earl Wild was the man for the job, and it's such a shame he only did two.

I think the Sonnambula was Nicolosi's best Thalberg recording. It just sings and flows and the trills melt into the background.

Bellucci sounds like a flock of woodpeckers in comparison.

I'll give them both a comparative re-listen later. O/t, but the woodpeckers amuse me, because that's what I think of Nicolosi's trills in La Traviata. If you've not heard it, I recommend you listen to Oleg Marshev here - eccentricities, but fascinatingly played in the grand manner.

Hi Thal,

Do you have something against woodpeckers?

Only when they try to play Thalberg.
