Joining a band.

Do you guys think that joining a band would motivated you to work harder on your musical skills? And by band I mean playing whatever you heart desires, like I don't know ... castanets.

Not keyboard?
I'd say go for it. It's a different thought process for playing. More harmonic/jazz thinking.
The ones I've run across aren't very serious. That can be annoying, but classical music prep knocks the heck out of the little groups I accompanied a bit.
What I would do is waste too much time on a group that's not serious. Get what you want out of it and keep moving.
