Do you think mechanical practice can get skill?

I think need often practice (E.g. Hanon)
If song need arises to practice
I same with Horowitz saw no need

I never practicing Mechanical etude ,These etudes make ears bad, not good for touch keys, because they are dead , Mechanical exercise of skill is not helpful .

Do what works for you, not what works for others.

Blindly follow someone else's path and you are likely to get lost.

I find it incredibly useful to just have days where I play scales in thirds, 6ths, then swap the hands invert the intervals, then practise left hand at least twice as much, then play it all staccato, then swung legato, then swung staccato, then in triplets, and then in whatever rhythmic pattern comes into my head. And then everything contrary, even though the melodic minor sounds sh*t in contrary motion.

It takes ages, but i highly recommend it, you see an almost instant improvement. After about an hour it starts to be weird and meditative and becomes really fun and shuts out the rest of the world....and then you start to be really aware of the fact that you're just operating a big weird machine....

Hi A99966613,

How you practice is more important than what you practice.

the Russians says "yes" but I say "No" to a level, finger dexterity and stamina is good but they are pure scales, they are not like the difficulties you are facing with in an etude like Chopin's for example

The poll is funny because horowitz used hanon exercises to a great extent

"If you want to get a good technique, perhaps you don't have to practice all the life, but in the beginning certainly you must practice about 3 or 4 hours a day on pure technique: scales, exercices and etudes.
"In the daily practice of technique pure it is not only necessary to play regular scales but also scales in sixths and Czerny etudes too (...)", said Jeanne-Marie Darré, the "Grande Damme" of the French Piano.
