Help me!!! Editions of prokofiev
on: May 31, 2015, 01:58:44 PM
Im looking for a GOOD copy of prokofiev's third piano sonata. I ordered a book from dover thinking the print might be ok. but its the exact same as what you can find on imslp

I usually use the henle blue books that have the best printing. not this horrible ink blob on paper. can anyone point me in the right direction to finding a good copy of this sonata? or do I just have to suck it up?

International Music Company produced the best edition of the Prokofiev sonatas.

This is the edition with which I studied them years ago.

what is does the ink on the paper look like. Im weary of spending $80. on something that might not be as good as what I already have.

Hi Hlcee6337,

International Music Company right now produces an edition of the 3rd sonata, but it might be a different editor and not the same as the 3rd sonata in the "authentic edition".

Maybe someone here knows more about this?

If I had my copy here I would offer to send you a scan and a photo of a page from it so that you can see it, but my copy is in the U.S.

You are right, it is a lot spend on a volume of sheet music which may not be personally satisfactory.

In addition, it is out of print - I suspect in some way connected to changes in copyright law in recent years and effecting Prokofiev's music - so one wouldn't want to mark it up or flex the binding.  With one copy already at $263, it seems to be on the way to becoming a bit of a collectible.

I've never used any other edition of the Prokofiev sonatas, so I can't really compare editions.

I would suggest looking into the International Music Library single no. 3 edition even though the editor may be different.

Isn't there a nearby university where you can run into the music library and have a quick look at such things?

Mvh,
Michael

IMC edition of the Prokofiev Third sonata recently came back into print in Canada (or at least I just saw one yesterday at my local Music Store).  I personally learned from a Boosey and Hawkes edition, which I suppose is good ... but the paper is not nearly as good as IMC.

Sikorski publishes some jiggy Prokofiev .  Some rather nice editions generally.  I'd check their catalogue or inquire directly with them as well.  Worthwhile option I think

Get the boosey and hawkes edition if it is available to you!
Here is vol 2, containing sonatas 6-9
https://www.amazon.com/PIANO-SONATAS-VOL2-NOS-AUTHENTIC/dp/0634034626/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1433146412&sr=1-2&keywords=prokofiev+sonatas

I have volume 1 and have played through all the sonatas, I can verify its good.
