Your view of music-making
on: June 03, 2015, 08:44:33 PM
I don't think I've ever made a poll before!

(edit: it shows! I've allowed up to three options when what I really wanted was to give people to option to vote up to three times - never mind  ;D )

Just interested to see people's views..

You could have guessed my view, I think. As I do not perform in public I chose the last option, but I do maintain a small repertoire of pieces for my own enjoyment. Although I composed very many pieces years ago, I began to find the restrictions of notation, particularly with regard to rhythm, too confining. I was beginning to hear my music in terms of notation before the event, which distinction is important but quite subtle. Occasionally I have written approximations to improvised music, but I find it very difficult to do so unambiguously, and hopelessly time consuming.

Hi Ronde_des_sylphes,

Maybe there is a suggestion for how one is to reply if one is not boxed in by any view of what music making is or is not.

I did.

And tell me about it, I'm doing that just now, heavens above it's hard work!

Hi Ronde_des_sylphes,

That is for if "none of the above" best accords with one's view.  To check that box would imply that one has a view on what constitutes music making.

I am still working on the preliminary of arrival at a fully satisfactory definition of music. With the aid of such a definition of music, perhaps I might then know what music-making is.

Hi Ronde_des_sylphes,

That is what I am doing right now, up late and editing music with Finale!
