Counting trills for bach invention 2?
on: June 13, 2015, 06:30:34 PM
Okay, so for Bach's Invention No. 2, the sixteenth notes within the song are usually played quite slowly (about how fast eighth notes when a metronome is set to 75 beats per minute for quarter notes). Trills are typically 32nd notes, but in this song, that would make the trills quite slow. My question is, how would you play the trills in this piece?

I play those trills as 32nd notes, even if that means they are fairly slow. My understanding is that Baroque trills were meant to be played in rhythm and that sometimes that means they come out a good deal slower than we are used to hearing trills sound in classical and Romantic period music.
