Schumann Fantasy in C
on: July 12, 2015, 10:13:19 PM
Hello everyone,

I've been trying to find a new piece to begin.  Although I was first thinking about playing another scherzo (I've just learned the 2nd one in the set), lately I've been enjoying listening to Schumann's Fantasy in C Major, especially the first movement.

The two hardest pieces in my repertoire are Debussy's Reflets dans Leau and Chopin's Scherzo 2.  Is the first movement of the Fantasy comparable in difficulty to these pieces or will it be too much of a challenge?

Thanks,

Michael

I look forward to turning my attention to the Schumann Fantasy, i think it's a step up from the Scherzo, but not a totally impractical one. You'd only find the length of it a greater concern, from what i can tell.
Beethoven-Alkan, concerto 3
Faure barcarolle 10
Mozart-Stradal, symphony 40

It is significantly more difficult. Additionally, it really doesn't make sense to play only one movement of the Fantasy. It must be played as a whole, and the second movement is notoriously gnarly.

If it were not for the Paganini-esque jumps in the code of the middle movement, the Phantasie
would not be staggeringly hard. It requires great musicality thouh, and considerable stamina in the march.
