Good piece to improve finger work
on: July 28, 2015, 04:27:25 PM
Hi there!

Just out of curiousity what pieces would be suitable to improve overall finger work ( aside from the broad term any Bach P+F ect ect ). My signature gives a rough impression of where I'm at and I just fell that this aspect of technique I could brush up on.

Thanks!
Pieces I'm polishing at the mo:
Debussy reflections on the water (images)
Chopin ballade no.3 op.47
Liszt/Wagner Isolde liebestod

So that's how visitor gets all his posts- he puts each repertoire recommendation in a separate post ;D
Anyways, here are some pieces to improve fingerwork.
Schubert Impropmptus Op 90, any of them work.
Chopin Etude 10/11 (might not be what you're looking for, but a good piece to mess around with if nothing else)
For the LH, Chopin etude Op 10/9 (useful in ballades, with the flowing accompaniments that this etude works on specifically)
Any sonatas by Mozart or Scarlatti.

You can look up Moszkowski's op 72. I would suggest no 1 or 11 (that is what I did and found helpful). Also Czerny op 740 is great and some of the etudes are beautiful. I like particularly no 8 & 28 (for left hand), no 14 & 31.

'Etude Magnifique'  by Robin Lamott.  It is a very melodic piece, good for developing technique, wont bore you practicing and perfecting it.  The faster you play it the better it will sound. - email me for a direct download link.

Hi thanks for all your responses I'll think about all of them and lightly tackle it ( by lightly I mean slowly ). Just a bit of background I was reading my crit sheet from my abrsm grade 8 exam I did about two years ago which I did quite well in ( distinction :D) but the thing that kept coming up in my pieces was my fingerwork hence why I asked!
Pieces I'm polishing at the mo:
Debussy reflections on the water (images)
Chopin ballade no.3 op.47
Liszt/Wagner Isolde liebestod

There is no such animal as a piece to improve fingerwork, this is one of the biggest missconceptions teachers teach you.  Start working out your fingering and dont simply follow the publishers suggestions. You cant go and play Czerny thinking it will help your fingereing because Chopin requires something else.  You want to improve fingering use the correct fingering and practice 4 hours a day.

To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
