Finger exercises to improve middel/ring/pinky finger
on: August 03, 2015, 03:23:35 PM
Hi!
I am playing Griegs piano sonata in e minor op 7 andante right now, and there is this little section where my middel ring and pinky finger has to work really fast. i am really struggling with that, because my fingers dosen't feel strong enough. Is there a exercise to improve just the middle ring and pinky finger? Help is really needed!
The thing I need to be able to play are sixthteens notes like a drill, hard to explain
Thanks for answering and sorry for my bad english!

There are a lot of exercises out there. The standard one is where you hold a note down with four fingers and play a note repeatedly with one finger. Liszt's Technical Exercises begin with these. I have heard from some that these can be dangerous, however.
The main thing is to coordinate them. Practice scales with them by playing CDE in succession with 3, 4, and 5, then DEF, EFG, etc. Do it in different keys and the chromatic scale. There are ways to make this more challenging, by using fingers one and two to play thirds, or using either one or two to play a note a third down from the initial note played by the 3 finger in an ascending scale, so each time you play a note with finger 3, either 1 or 2 will hold a note a third down from the note 3 plays, at least while you're ascending--it is really tough to do well at a fast tempo in most keys other than C major or a minor.
Practicing Chopin's Op. 10 no. 2 will let you focus on these fingers as well. Emile-Robert Blanchet's 64 Preludes op 41, available on IMSLP, contain a great many that focus on fingers 345; the first one would be a good start.

Your english isn't too bad, don't worry
I'm not really one for exercises. If there's a problem I work on the problem, I don't see the need to forever be doing exercise when every piece is its own etude.
Have you considered an alternative fingering? perhaps 3 and 4?
I would also second working on chopin's Op. 10 no. 2, that might help and it's good music
