Light pain in thumb..
on: August 12, 2015, 12:59:27 PM
The pain isn't there most of the day, and it isn't really noticeable. Heating my hand up (sitting on it.. lol) will get rid of the pain when it does come up. I had this since last week when I played tennis (which seemed to have triggered the pain) and after I practised about 5 hours in one sitting (when I usually just play 1 hour a day). The pain is at the MCP and IP joint. Is this most probably just a sprain or strain and should I just relax my hand for a few days?

slow progress makes for faster recovery. be conservative, i would not play at all for about a week then re introduce practice at 30 min every other day for a week, then 30 minutes daily for a week, then 1 hour a day every other day for a week, then 1 hour daily, then re asses. if you get pain at all during that time go see a physician to get a therapist referral for assessment and rehab plan of care.

Alright thanks. I really hope it isn't anything serious >.<

Bet you'll be fine in a few days, it's probably a strain, in other words lame. You over used a muscle group or even single muscle, tendon etc. It's sore, like when you ran a mile and never run ordinarily, you wake up with some sore muscles. I think if you really damaged something it would be much more uncomfortable. I'd take an Advil and stay well hydrated but I'm not advising anyone else on meds.

While it's sore just back off on heavy practice, use the thumb lightly avoiding further strain.

Hey I used to fly fish on vacation in Maine till my fourth finger seized up on my casting hand, if the fish were rising I was casting to them. I have 0 pain in that finger these days but a little arthritis in my index finger and that can be stiff in the morning like it is as I type this. I'm 65 now, this has slowly come on in the last year or two but it doesn't stop my playing.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Yep, thanks. I haven't felt any pain since early yesterday, so going to start playing again tomorrow.
