Haydn Alegretto - ABRSM grade 3
on: August 25, 2015, 02:26:54 PM
Hi all,

in december I am doing grade 3 ABRSM and one of my choices was a short alegretto from Haydn.

I just did a recording and I would like to get some feedback on this as i find it has a lot of room for improvement, don't know if this will get me a pass...  :(

What do you think?

Ahh, haydn. I played a piece like this in fall of 2010, it was a great time of my life, your piece just brought back happy memories and yellow and red leaves falling off the trees. Thanks and good playing, I would pass you if I was the judge. :)

Thx pencilart,

doesn't anyone think this should be played faster than this... It is at the limit of allegretto at about 112BPM, but I have heard presto interpretations of this piece which sound much more lively...

Or do you think speeding  up is a bad idea for the exam?

Yes, speed it up, when you can. Never play something faster than you can play it.

He says after posting a recording of himself stumbling blindly through prelude 16 at 183 bpm LOL!

your balance settles more into itself as it gets going in recent ver. it's nice. I would address your voicing and lh vs rh balance at the very beginning but other than that, really great work.

Hé visitor,

thanks for your remarks. I was wondering what you mean buy voicing... Should i let the top note of the thirds come out more?

And should the left hand be more quiet?

thx!

voicing is what emphasis you give to each register or line. in the case of this tune,it's much easier to define as 1. give more emphasis to where the melody is, ie right hand  is fine in spots, but left is too loud some times. So try your best to make the left hand lighter and quieter.

more dramatic and definite contrasts in phrasing, ie be more obvious with soft vs. loud sections to make it interesting, it's short, you don't have a lot of chances to make the impression so make softs softer, and louds louder, and plan your cresc and decresc.
