Best classical music piece on youtube?
on: August 27, 2015, 05:03:55 AM
What do you think? These are all gems IMO. There are many other equally incredible pieces on youtube, but (again IMO) these are SO MUCH BETTER than any other interpretations of these pieces. I don't believe that performances like these will ever quite be replicated. Every note is perfect.

Dang that's a fine interpretation but I don't care for the piece too much.

I just realized there was a topic similar to this but who cares why not have another.

Here's some more good ones.

< This guy is a beast

< Certainly not the best but still very good for an "unknown" pianist on an electric piano

< A few wrong notes but I think it's very very good. He gave me a master class!

Here's another batch.

There's a lot but I prefer this one. I can't get over the spasms that start at 2:10.

Excellent, of course. I prefer the one on his CD but this is almost the same.

Another awesome one. You can hear him singing along LOL :)

< I own this recording, I like it best.

< I found this interesting.

< These are impressive they look painful.

Islamey is a stupid piece and it's just sad that that's what so many people know from the composer...

Val? An acquired taste I guess  ;)

I agree. Islamey is also a hard piece

Val? An acquired taste I guess  ;)

But "val" is also very good, at least a heck of a lot better than me and probably better than 99.9% of the people here...

(hard to pick one from Gusty, but this one always sticks out in my mind, 1st is also so close, these were so tied to what was happening in his life, the tragedy, etc., these were 'game changers' in a way)

But not as good as most well known pianists. IMO of course. Her playing just lacks...that little something...

If I was happy to listen to anyone just because they are better than me, that would probably make 90% of anyone who ever touched the piano :D

AJ no way!! That's my favorite interpretation of this piece, I had just copied the link and was preparing to paste saying "this is better than the previous one by Pogorelich" and then I saw that you had just posted it... creepy. As I said, we must be distantly related ;)

Since you insist..

Well you don't have to if you don't want to :P

I do not like that video. I've seen it before. I'm a personal fan of how the pieces sound, besides the fact that he intentionally omitted most the notes that make 4 & 5 so hard. I absolutely HATE IT when pianist do that! ARGH >:( I mean, much better than I could do, but that's not saying much.

I take exception to the characterization of Islamey as "a stupid piece." I find it extremely well conceived for the instrument (and I know it "from the inside," having played it for many years). There's a lot there to enjoy if (and it's admittedly a big if) it's given a superb performance. I consider it something of a "travelogue," invoking a sort of Central Asian mystique (as filtered through a Russian consciousness) that I find quite appealing (Admittedly I have a fondness for that sort of thing).

As to Valentina, she has her flaws-------her performance of Islamey, for example, is erratic and even sloppy at times, but (as I recall) she nonetheless captures something of the music's essence.

I don't think I can think of any pianist whose work I universally admire, although Rubinstein comes close, so with that in mind, I'd like to mention some of her successes instead of harping on her failures.

For example, her Godowsky Fleidermaus is excellent: ditto her Rachmaninoff Little Red Riding Hood and sundry Chopin Etudes. I haven't listened to her Gaspard in a while but I do remember that my initial impression was favorable. Likewise some of her Scriabin and Prokofiev. Finally, unlike Thal, I enjoyed her playing of the Thalberg piece she's posted (I don't remember the exact title).

Granted, taste in music is a marvelously subjective experience, but I would hope that there's a level of professionalism that demands respect beyond any aesthetic expectations.

I like sound quality of Trifonov's a lot more, but I generally like Bozhanov's interpretation. It is so mature and elegant and sensitive. Well, Trifonov's is too ;D But still, you get what I'm saying.

I like Jorge Bolet's sound quality WAY BETTER, but I think Arrau's musicality is SO MUCH BETTER. However, his beginning is kind of turbulent, but once you get past that, Arrau gives you so much sensation that Bolet just doesn't.

P. S. That b!tch teacher claimed that she had a lesson RIGHT after JOrge Bolet had his lesson with a famous teacher, and she was asked to play the same program as Bolet had played. Well, guess what? My teacher also claims she was in the same chamber music group at Juillard  as Emmanuel Ax and Yo-yo Ma. (As if they needed 2 pianists ::)) She also claimed she went to Curtis, but the Curtis website doesn't have her in their alumni search function.

Well, Bolet lived 1910-1990s)
Yoyo Ma was born in the 50s.  ;D

So can you actually name those who have been her equal/superiors?

And if you were thinking of yourself as an equal/superior, I completely disagree (no offense).

Marik and thracozaag. I'm pretty sure the latter is on one of the Husum Rarities cd, btw, though I couldn't tell you the year offhand. There's a few others where I don't really see any reason why she's better, people like arielpiano and can, and indeed electrafingers. The only difference is that she's more famous, and more famous doesn't necessarily mean better.

No offense taken, my comments were a general observation which was nothing to do with me.
