Big hands/long fingers and warmups
on: August 27, 2015, 09:30:42 PM
Hello to all piano and music friends.

I have been playing the piano for quite some time, and there is a problem I am trying to solve for a long time, this here is nothign but a desperate try, maybe someone knows exactly what i mean and can help me out...

I am 185 cm tall, and have relatively big hands (not huge though). Everytime a sit on the piano and just play piece, i feel frustrated because i have no control over the sound, i try to shape a phrase and the phrase just doesnt sound as i wanted. Sometimes i want to play pianissimo and i hear no sound at all, other times i aim for a crescendo and you hear very radical change, not smooth... In general, i feel terrible and i can't enjoy this kind of playing and this becomes even more frustrating when i play for others.

Everything seems to change when I practice about two hours. My fingers are warm and flexible, then I can play music almost with no efford, and I like the sound which i can influence at any time the way i want. And the result is not something unexpected, its exactly what i wanted. In this stage i really enjoy playing the piano.

I have heard that large hands need more time to warm up. But two hours to just be able to play... is seems a bit too much. And my hands cool off after maybe an hour or so. In a month i have a piano exam, and I don't know if i will be able to warm up 2 hours before...

any ideas? Anyone facing the same problem?

You could try warming up your hands/fingers under warm water and run through some scales or finger exercises. Shouldn't take that long until you fill warmed up and in control.

I wouldn't of thought that larger hands take any longer to warm up, if anything probably less time !
