Composing a sad piano song
on: August 29, 2015, 11:32:08 PM
Hi all,

I would really appreciate your comments on my original piano song. I came up with the piece when I was really depressed. In the composition, I was trying to express sadness as well as hope (for a better future).

Nice job with the piece. I don't think I'm a good enough composer to give feedback on it, but I will say that this probably belongs in the audition room, and you will probably get harped on from stupid legalistic idiots other members on this site saying it is a piece, not a song...
You might have seen one of my videos without knowing it was that nut from the forum

I think it's really good! Although I'd like to ask you can link the sheet music. It also really helps analyzing and going deeper into the piece :)

But as I said, I really think it's a GREAT piece! :)

My humble 2 cents worth:

- Really great effort for even thinking of composing!
- I personally felt that the intro seems a little long. The left hand accompaniment did not change till almost a minute, that's almost half of your piece?
- A sad melody in my mind is something very legato which the left hand got to complement. The "breathing" of 4 notes in the front was something I would hold a little longer, just to give that sad melancholy effect.
- I was thinking, when would the melody be changing out of that few notes. And boy, it was great when you did venture out of the nice comfort zone in front! Maybe could bring that to the front and explore more  :P

Hoping to hear more compositions!

A beautiful performance.  In the spirit of constructive listening, I would say there is some room for more creativity at the intro.  It is good music with feeling

You have a good theme in this piece, now to catch up on technique and application. Don't let that stop you, grow into this !! lol   Don't Stop. Amen

I don't care about the points you get at the youtube channel.  I do suggest to you that you go to David Nevue's Channel though. You need finesse in your playing, finesse in your application of your composition/compositions. Listen to some of his music and that kind of flow, look at some of his music scores as well. Listen to his unique and self taught ability to emphasize and stay in time, to express his music.  Gain some understanding in your own creativity, gain some polish, then I might have a look see at youtube. But just don't stop working at it ok ? You have a good start you should grow in it and you will if you stay in it.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

my two cents:

-put some pedal, lots of pedal
-try a lyrical key, like c# minor or f# minor
-rubato

I made an account and hadn't used it in a year. Welcome back, kevon.
