How to practice triplets rhythms to make them even
on: September 07, 2015, 04:56:50 PM
Hi guys
So I have been working on some pieces lately and my repertoire started to have more and more triplets in them (no polyrythm, thank god) and for some reason i cant get them to be even. I know with 16th notes i can do rythm exercises like long-short, short-long, or long-long-short-short, etc. and it ends up even when I play it normally(I have to play the "reverse" of the previous exercise to make it so i dont play it normally, i.e. After I do long-short i would have to do short-long, but it comes out even if I do.)
The problem with triplets is that there's. No "reverse" of any of the rhythms because there's three rather than four. How can I make triplets even? How do you guys do it?
Any help would be appreciated.

Try to play them in chords. That usually works out pretty good. So, do it like this:
If you have 4 triplets in a bar, play them as 4 chords (all the three notes simultaniously).
After that play only the first notes. After that play the first two notes. Then when you've made that sound even go on and play all of the three notes.
Also try this. If you (e.g.) have a triplet figure in C major that goes like this in the left hand:
C - E - G, then try to play it in reverse order. So: G - E - C. If that sounds even, you can turn it back around. You can also aply the first technique whilst reversing the triplet.
These pieces contain a good deal of triplet work:
Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2/1 - 4th movement
Bach: Prelude in D minor from the WTC Book 1
BW,
Glenn

a very simple way to practice triplet rhythms is to pick a 3 syllable word--or use the old "one-la-lee two-la-lee" counting method or the ever famous... tri-ple-let tri-ple-let tri-ple-let tri-ple-let . Whatever you choose say it out loud while you play and you should have an easier time getting those triplets to sound even...
say the rhythm before you play, too.
