Pletnev doesn't get mentioned very often in these forums (he seems to get attention as a composer/transcriber than a pianist here). However, he is one of my favorite 10 pianists, along with Grigory Sokolov (inserts heart emojis) and Andre LaPlante. And I LOVE that suite. I tried the Tea Dance and the Sugar Plum Fairy for a recital and tried to learn both in 2 weeks. But then, I could only choose one, and the Chinese Dance is umm.. risky
and it's not very pretty. [hail to Tchaikovsky for his Asian Stereotyping.. NOT
] So I did the Sugar Plum Fairy. Worst decision in my life, JK
awesome , glad to hear i am not only admirer. his playing is nothing short of superb. super creative, his conducting skills shape his overall aesthetic and I believe serves him well in his 'orchestration' to the piano with both his transcribing/composing, but also his interpretation of textures and lines in standard works by others.
he is in my top 4 of all time right behind Earl Wild, Rosalyn Turek, Yeol Eum Son.
i do love this entire suite, i did play the Taneyev version of that sugar plum dance (and will likely work the pas de deux next again from the Taneyev) , no matter who penned the arrangement (not from the original suite, but the direct or concert transcription, the standard one is not so bad) are all buggers to learn .
Great as this one is, and I love the entire thing, I am also a huge fan of his sleeping beauty concert suite, that one gets even less play.here the master goes at 1-4 excerpt
