New keyboard buzzing?
on: September 12, 2015, 01:26:59 AM
I used to have a keyboard as a kid and got pretty proficient at it (self taught by listening to songs and learning to play by trial+error, never formal lessons), but when it finally broke, it was never replaced. Now I am an adult who wants to see if I might like to play again. I did not want to buy a really expensive keyboard at first in case I find I am not quite as interested in it as I was as a kid ;)

I ended up getting an el-cheapo Hamzer 61 key keyboard new for >$50 on ebay. It actually doesn't sound half bad and all the keys work, but it is making a rather annoying buzzing sound (constantly). I saw a couple threads saying something else buzzing could cause the keyboard to possibly pick up the sound. I do have a rather loud refrigerator nearby where I wanted to put it, so I did move it into the bedroom, but the buzzing continued. Headphones make the buzzing much more annoying. I even tried a different plug, but no luck. I know you get what you pay for, but is there anything else I can try to make it stop buzzing? It really isn't worth the hassle of returning, especially since it does otherwise work, but if theres some other "magic trick" to get the buzzing to stop, that would be awesome. I'm sure I can learn to live with it for a while as I see if playing is something I'm interested in enough to invest in a better keyboard that does not buzz. Any advice would be appreciated!

if the buzzing is in the headphones and in the speakers you need to return the keyboard...it's got bad issues on the inside.

Is this this little Hamzer which can either use 6 D batteries or be plugged in?

If it is, try running it on batteries.  If it still buzzes, it's toast.  You'll either have to live with it or return it.  If the buzzing only happens when it is plugged in, then it's the power supply.  If it has a two prong plug, try putting the plug in the other way up (if it isn't polarized).  If it has a grounded plug, or still buzzes, try seeing if you can find somewhere to ground it separately.  If none of that fixes the buzz... back it goes, unless you can live with it.

I believe it can also run on batteries. I'd have to buy some. The ebay seller seems OK with sending another keyboard though.

So the seller is just going to ship me a new one. I hope it was just a defective unit and I can start learning to play once the replacement arrives. The buzzing really is quite annoying/distracting.
