Drill the notes on-the-go
on: September 13, 2015, 11:12:57 PM
Hi Guys,

After 3 years piano learning, I found I'm still very poor at sight-reading. To make a change, I developed an app in spare time to help myself drill the notes on-the-go.  It works very well to me, and now I would like to introduce it to you guys. If you are interested, check out the following YouTube video to see how it works and if it can help you too:

I can see how this might help you name notes.  Has it helped you with sight reading?

Yes, it helped my sight-reading.  In the app, I force myself to identify not only the note letter name but also its octave, and this can help improve my keyboard orientation.  Also, I often train myself to see the keyboard and answer in the staff, and I found this kind of Reversal Learning is very helpful.

Further to your question, let me explain a little bit more.

Actually, my piano teacher told me to sight read by intervals, and I totally agree with that, but I found very often that I was so slow when I had to identify the absolute key location of those notes with "big jump", espacially for those at the ledger lines, so I was wondering what if I can identify every note as quick as the Middle C like second nature?

So I developed this app to train myself (BTW, I tried several other similar apps before I developed my own, but I found they are missing some features I need), and I have been using it a lot.  Now, I feel I'm much much faster when I have to identify the absolute note locations.

BTW, besides sight reading, it can also help practise ear training, solfege, and Curwen hand sign. I believe that the different conversions among the different forms of a note can help one another improve.

I have learned for less than a year. To practice sight reading I start anew piece with L or R hand and go through it with the slow metronome saying each note out as I go. Works quite well.

Good for you!  Speaking out each note is a good idea.  Thanks for sharing! :)

The app is available at iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/music-note-trainer/id1023154291?mt=8

Also, you can see it in my support website I just created: https://mymusicpartner.com/

It's an iPhone/iPad app instead of a web browser one, so I'm sorry that it doesn't support Safari.  My idea was to train myself when I don't have access to a piano or keyboard, on-the-go, so I think iPhone/iPad is more convenient.

Maybe, I can provide a Mac OS X version in the future.  It depends on how difficult it is (shouldn't be hard), and how popular this app will be.

In the video, I used the iPhone simulator without frame, so it doesn't look like a real iPhone, maybe that's the reason why you asked about Safari.  Sorry for the confusion!

It's simply called Music Note Trainer, but if you search by its name in the App Store, it may not be the first in the results, due to Apple's strange sorting strategies which I don't like at all.

So, you can just click the following link from your iPad, and it will bring you directly to the App within the App Store:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/music-note-trainer/id1023154291?mt=8

Let me know if you cannot find it. Thanks.
