I played trumpet, but not too often lately.  I also took guitar lessons but as I don't own a guitar I don't really practice much!

Hi!
I play the bassoon, the organ and the recorder, too. I think only piano is a bit boring.

Let's see...I'm fairly proficient on the accordian (don't laugh, I'm not joking!).  I also play the harmonica (awesome blues instrument), a little guitar, and I played the trombone once upon a time.

But how, my dears, can you call the piano BORING!?!  It is still, hands down, the most versitile instrument around.  Nothing else compares to its versatility of dynamic and style!  I simply cannot understand how you could be bored at the helm of this instrument...!?!

I also play viola. I like piano much better, or at least I'm much more inclined to practice the piano. But it is nice to play in school (and other) orchestra(s) as well a quartets (w/ paying jobs!). I'm glad I play both, but piano is my priority.

Good post!

As a follow-up:  Did anyone CHOOSE to play the piano after discovering music through other instruments?

I started my musical life playing the trumpet when I thought it would be "neat" to join the school band at about 9 years of age.  A few years later I realized that the piano was the ultimate interprative instrument:  the only instrument in which a single person could conjure harmonies and melodies simultaneously (or melodies in counterpoint).  I fell in love with the piano and jumped ship!

Yes, my bassoon sounds very cool, because of the deep and high tones. These different points uses in all of the bassoon-concertos like Mozart, Weber, Hummel, Dwarionas...

Yes, I was playing electric bass in jazz/rock/fusion/funk bands for 10 years before I rediscovered the piano.. (played Suzuki method piano when I was 4 years old for 3 years but gave it up for 20+ years :(

I play the violin in the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. It's a wonderful experience to be playing inside an orchestra. You get to hear all the instrumental parts, including those that often are covered. Ahh harmonies...

I think I played alto metalliphone in the fifth grade, recorder in third, plastic-egg-with-rice-inside in the fourth, and triangle in the sixth. [I disliked singing the descant parts in the elementary school choir, so I always volunteered for an accompanying instrument.]

I also started viola two years ago.

I also play viola. I like piano much better, or at least I'm much more inclined to practice the piano. But it is nice to play in school (and other) orchestra(s) as well a quartets (w/ paying jobs!). I'm glad I play both, but piano is my priority.

Me too. I play viola because it allows you to be completely submerged in all the harmonies of an orchestra. [I was also told that violists often get jobs in orchestras more easily than other instruments.] And because it's not a squeaky violin. :D [The stratosphere-of-the-E-string notes can sound good but the bias against them is due to personal experience.]

When I was a child I learnd "Melodica" and "Akkordeon" but now I just play piano.
I don't have the time to learn another instrument but I learn singing, so my voice is a second instrument.

I play cello - it's my "main" instrument, but I don't exactly ignore piano for it.

Glenn Gould once famously remarked that he never really cared for the sound of the piano, but it was the only instrument at which one person could approximate an orchestra (or something like that).  I have a similar feeling -- I don't really enjoy the sound of the piano, and I don't really the act of playing it per se, but it has the repertoire I want to play (Bach, that is -- if only he wrote more for other instruments!).  Does anyone else feel this way?  That if only Bach or whoever had more graciously favored the oboe, or tuba, or whatever, that's what you'd play?

Piano is my main instrument, and I also play violin in the orchestra, and I used to play oboe in my middle school band.

I'm also starting to pick up the erhu (chinese violin), but I have to self-teach for now...

You need more than a piano, two hands and a brain to play music.  You also need hot sauce.

How are you going with the Erhu?  I've heard violinists make the worst Erhu students - not sure why, but that's what some Chinese musicians say.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
