Need some advice
on: September 27, 2015, 04:10:49 PM
Hello, I'm new here and I need some advice.

I used to learn with a private teacher, and I was working on Bach Inventions, some Chopin Waltz, and two Beethoven Sonatas, and Czerny.

Chopin Waltz Op. 64/1
Chopin Waltz Op. 18
Chopin Waltz Op. 34/1
Beethoven Sonata Op. 14
Beethoven Sonata Op. 27/2 (3rd movement)

I was quite confused about my teacher's arrangement because the difficulty between those pieces seems to have a huge gap.

Before playing Beethoven Sonata Op.14 and 27/2, I had played 49/1 and 49/2. I had also practiced some Chopin Nocturnes (Op. 9/1, 9/2, KK IVa no. 16) on my own.

I'm currently playing other Chopin Waltz and Nocturnes, and still playing Beethoven Sonata Op. 14 and 27/2, and of course Bach Inventions(though I know that it's difficult to practice Bach without teacher.) And sometimes I play Czerny.

I want to try some Chopin Etudes, Scherzo Op. 31, and Bach's French Suites, are they too difficult for me or can I practice them in a slow pace?

I also want to play Schumann Kinderszenen and Album for the Young, they're so beautiful.

Thanks for your advice. ;D ;D

Nobody knows what is and isn't too hard for you. I didn't really understand from your post whether you are still taking lessons or not. If you are, ask your teacher. If not, I'll say that trying to learn pieces about your skill level on your own can cause you to internalize bad playing habits. I have made this mistake in the past. Luckily, after some time I was able to correct those bad habits by doing a lot of online research and watching instructional videos, but my playing sounded pretty awful and for a while I was running the risk of inuring myself.

The main problem I had was with extreme tension and awkward movements, trying to reach keys that I didn't really know how to reach properly. It's very important to relax your wrists and learn to do natural movements (wrist rotation especially).
Working on:
Beethoven - Waldstein Sonata
Bach - C minor WTC I
Liszt - Liebestraume no. 3
Chopin - etude 25-12

Thanks for your advice. ;D ;D

I don't take lessons now, for several readons.

My teacher had taught me about relaxing wrists and the movements, so I practice in the way she told me, and sometimes I watch videos on youtube.

I think I may try some Chopin etudes, and keep working on waltz, Beethoven sonatas and Bach Inventions.

And...if my parents allow, I will take lessons. I think this is the most important thing.
