How to tackle smoothness + playing at forte?
on: September 29, 2015, 03:21:32 AM
Dear all, I'm currently learning this piece (By Schaum Piano Course: The Red Book - Grade 1).

My teacher put some challenge into the piece and asked me to play the piece with legato (And review next week). Can anyone share with me how do I play fort + legato + tempo 160pm for this piece?

What I can: I am only able to play it smoothly with that speed.

What I can't: I can't play it with forte since my fingers are trying to smoothen the song with fast speed.

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Remember this, forte is not about pressing hard on the keys it's about velocity. How rapidly the key is depressed. The tension never changed in your fingers against the key bed. The key bed is the key bed, once you hit it that's it, pressing harder makes 0 difference.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Thanks for pointing out and will I always remember that.

Well you get to practice with that in mind at least lol ! Releasing the tension will aid in smoothness or should but it is not all there is to it. It will come its an acquired skill.
