Classical Era pieces that aren't Sonatas
on: September 29, 2015, 05:19:28 AM
Hello fellow pianists!

I'd like to know what your favorite Classical era solo piano pieces are that are NOT sonatas.  No concertos or chamber pieces please, just solo.  I'm asking because I'm looking to add such a piece onto my upcoming program.  Please limit responses to pre-Schubert.

What I've already considered:

Beethoven
-32 Variations in C minor
-Eroica Variations
-Andante Favori
-Bagatelles

Haydn
-F minor variations

Mozart
-Adagio in B minor
-Rondo in A minor
-Fantasie in C minor
-Fantasie in D minor

Thank you for everything so far!  I'm personally drawn to both of the Rondos by Hummel.

Even if you don't have suggestions other than what is already listen, feel free to talk about your experiences playing these pieces or hearing them live in recitals.  What worked, what didn't, etc.  I'm grateful for all you have to say.

Keep it coming, people  :D

Besides, Schubert really is a romantic composer.

Oh sorry, I didn't read the whole post, silly me! That's up for debate though haha.

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
