College Audition Rep
on: September 29, 2015, 11:08:28 PM
Hi, I'm getting to the point where I need to start finalizing my college audition program and start learning/picking back up pieces. So far, this is what my program is looking like:

Bach: prelude and fugue in d minor, book 2
Classical complete sonata: Haydn C major Hob XVI 50
Large Romantic: Chopin fantasie op 49
Chopin etude: ? (2 choices are probably 10/4 or 10/8)
Other composers etude: ? (2 possible choices: Debussy octaves or Liszt la leggierezza)
20th/21st century work/set of works (>6 minutes): ?

What do you think of this program? Is it balanced? I'm not looking to play the most difficult pieces I know, but rather pieces I know I can play very well. The Chopin etude is probably going to be 10/4 or 10/8, but I could always learn another etude in the "other composer" category besides the 2 I have right now. I need help choosing a contemporary piece. Some possible choices right now are selections from Ravel's la Tombeau de Couperin, Poulenc's Napoli Suite, Prokofiev Sonata 3, Kabalevsky sonata 3. Any other suggestions?

Sounds like a demanding programme!
My only concern is that everything there is a bit "notey", so maybe it would be worth playing something slow for one of the études.
Don't setting for something so obvious as Prokofiev or Ravel, because everyone has heard it 100 times already. Try to discover something seldom performed...there is a lot

Best of luck!

For the etudes all the options you listed are fine.  So it's just a matter of which ones you like more.  I can't help you with that.

BUT...

For 20th/21st century music you could do some of Carl Vines shorter pieces.  I don't think you can find any recordings besides the sonatas in YouTube so you would have to buy an iTunes album.  I think some of them are quite accessible and would be a great audition piece.

What else...  You could always do something by Bartok.

I did some of Arno Babajanians 6 pictures for my audition back in the day and it was fun.  There's YouTube recordings of those.

The other ones you listed are fine as well.  Just make sure that you can learn it and play it well in time.

You're auditioning in like January right?  If that's the case you really gotta find out what you're gonna play and hold that sh*t down soon.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have learned at least the notes to a majority of the pieces I listed. The only completely new pieces I will have to learn are probably the Chopin etude and contemporary piece. I'm a junior right now, so my audition will actually be January/February of 2017. I don't plan on practicing or playing only these pieces this whole time, but I'll start practicing all these pieces in a few months.

you could look into doing a set/selection of Roberto Russo's preludes? this one in homage to Shosty is super cool
you can fill in your time slot w/ a couple of others
