the shape of the hand looks a little flat...  but I wouldn't say bad technique

yes... THAT is bad technique.  He is hard to figure out that one... he has had some kind of training no doubt--he has some weird ideas but his terminology is correct...  he just doesn't play anywhere close to the way he should for the level of training and experience he claims to have.  odd. :-\
