Own Composition Live Performance
on: November 09, 2015, 01:48:20 AM
Hi.

Here's my performance of my own composition. I had it posted earlier too but the feedback I got was nearly nonexistent. I wrote following:

''Hi.

Here's my latest composition. I'm posting it because would be nice to hear some feedback of it.
Recording is from concert situation and I haven't played that long, so don't mind the few mistakes or clumsiness.

My piano teacher said, when we were thinking proper name for the composition that the piece has something in it which reminds of Franz Liszt. The name is a mark of respect to one of my absolute favorite piano composers throughout the history.

As you can hear the theme of the piece is based on appoggiatura -form.

Here's the link to hear it:

Comments are always welcome!''

So yeah I would really appreciate some feedback.

I have the score of the piece and I'm going to send it if needed.  :)

That sounded really good, but don't you think you should lower the bench a little? !!

Haha didn't have nerves to start to do that in this concert (there were many players also smaller kids) so I let it just like that. I don't mind playing a bit in wrong angle, but thanks for your comment. :D

Could some more experienced pianostreet member light up the situation why the audition room seems dead unless you are known user or hardcore provoker? Have read some topics and what I see is only bunch of sarcastic/flattening comments. Some replies are constructive though but seem to be few and far between. Sure many members are having their own projects and life events but I start to wonder is this the right forum to search feedback (or attention. lol) So do I waste only time here or should I be more patient? Thanks everyone

Sorry about that the frustration got a grip of me. I posted this like half year ago already and only comments i got was how weird title the piece had and a reply from Michael Sayers who seems to be the biggest laughing stock in this forum what I've seen. Sayers asked me to send the sheet music to him via email and I did but didn't hear from him so much after that. Nothing against Sayers or anybody else though.

And much appreciated for your reply pencilart3

You don't get answers because your composition is too good and everyone is envious. I wouldn't send the sheet music to anyone in here. Many may be plagiarizing it since it's so good.

Your piece is absolutely great but I think this forum is a wrong place for it. If you can do more that kind of compositions, I think you should record them properly and send to some record label.

Hahaha. Well I have heard better than this also here in this forum so wouldn't go envy this one :DD And I'm not trying to benefit of this composition or any other because I'm not going to be a professional composer, only sometimes giving my expressive desires to flow in this form in the side of playing the piano as a hobby. So if someone would plagiarize this piece wouldn't have so much against it (at least someone would think it is worth something to put it in his/her own names. lol)

Thanks for your kind words. :D

Why wouldn't you want to be a professional composer (or player)? Of course if you can do only a song per a year not then.

If you can remember those better compositions here, I'd be interested in them. It may be that they are better from your point of view. You can't hear your own music as the others do.

I'd buy a CD of that kind of music if produced well. And I can't hear that you would be plagiarizing anyone (I can be wrong), but it sounds personal.

How long it took to compose that piece?

I have since little kid dreamed of to be a doctor and at the moment I am studying to get even in there :DD (it's not that easy). Piano playing came along lot later than that. I started to play when I was 15. Playing piano would be awesome as a full-time job but I'm afraid that doing so where I live (Finland) wouldn't be that good idea (I should be extremely good player and only composing wouldn't be enough). Other aspect is that piano playing is more like mind nurturing thing and if playing would be my job it would maybe damage this.

And how long it took to compose this: Well I wasn't composing this 24/7, so it took me about 1-2 weeks to finish this one.

Yeah, I think you're much better composer than a player, but you play very well though.

0:55 - 1:10 is the grates part. Also 2:58 - 3:55.

What music do you listen to by yourself or what are your favorite artists?

I listen mostly only piano music of various composers. There are many great composers but if I would have to choose some then Chopin, Liszt and Beethoven are maybe the top 3 in my list.

Don't feel bad...Whether you get replies or not depends on many things, sometimes the users who are more likely to comment on original compositions just are not around at the time. Many of us only comment when we feel we have something meaningful to contribute... I did listen and have to admit  that your composition is not really to my taste. Which doesn't mean it's bad, just not my style of music. Quite theathrical I'd say :)

I am always impressed though when people perform something original and I hope you keep at it, both the composing and playing!

And you are quite right in your choice of career, especially in this part of the world ;)

I will keep on playing and composing once in a while. And I don't feel bad, not at all, was only a bit frustrated. :DD

And thanks for your comment, the musical tastes differs and I can't expect everyone to like my piece, just I don't like everything what I hear. :)

In my opinion the thread is not getting ruined and let's hope it stays like that. And I hope also that this thread doesn't end up being a scene of personal debate.

It has some interest and is quite idiosyncratic (I like the F# then G natural progression), if with fairly obvious Liszt stylistic references.

A couple of  suggestions:

Firstly a very minor one, regarding presentation. If you are playing from memory in public, put the music desk down!

Secondly, your composition is a bit harmonically static. It's all basically in F# minor or F# major. One traditional way to increase interest is by having different sections were in different (usually related) keys: this has the merit of combining dramatic input whilst drawing attention to structural form. So, for example, it might be an improvement if an F# major section was in D major, and it's easy enough to get between the keys: arguably you don't even need a modulating bridge passage. If you look through, for example, Liszt's bigger works, you will see that he deploys this sort of strategy frequently. As it stands, I think the dramatic impact of your composition is limited by the harmony not being terribly sophisticated, and by the limited level of dynamic variation (which may of course be due to the recording equipment used).

Keep at it - I happen to think composition is very rewarding and can be distinctly beneficial to performance and interpretation within the repertoire mainstream.

Thanks for your feedback ronde_des_sylphes! I will think and process your words. It's quite shame that the dynamics didn't come in this recording out the way I meant them to come but there should've been some variation between them.. And I'm aware that my composition has some limited harmonies and I am working on it and trying to improve. I'm at the moment only opening my way to the world of composing. I'm still in the beginning of the road using chords and progression within my comfort zone. I appreciate your comment!

Hi.
Got an idea considering my new composition. It starts to be near the finish line and I thought would anyone be willing to play and record it? Haven't finished the score yet but when I get it finished I would be able to send it. This would be educational and interesting for me how my score is being interpreted. I will record it by myself too when personal family events give a chance. + you probably also have better recording equipment than me :D.

And no worries it is possible to play, it's not only some midi-computercomposed-madness :D

So if anyone would want to try it I would appreciate it. :)
