Ginastera Piano Sonata 1
on: December 28, 2015, 01:54:09 AM
A little background...

This the start of my third year as a piano student at Georgia State University.  This was recorded in November of 1977 at my first of three full length programs given while an undergraduate student.

Here is a confession.  I entered my college piano performance program having not had a serious piano lesson from the 6th grade until my college audition.  I was accepted on probation for the program.  I worked by butt off and the probation was dropped after one quarter.  This performance was recorded live.  The piano was a Steinway concert grand, but the school would not have it tuned for my recital since this first one was not a requirement for my degree.  I had one string that was about two and a half octaves above middle C that was out of tune.  The day of the recital I chewed a hunk of bubble gum and stuck it on that strong to dampen it.

I liked the Ginastera Piano Sonata 1 a lot.  I was a fan of Emerson Lake and Palmer and when my teacher asked if I would like to play this I jumped on it fast.  This piece was later part of a program that, along with the Chopin Gm Ballade and Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, got me into the southeast U.S. regionals of the National Music Teacher's Association competition where I failed to advance to nationals...  I had a great time however.

Chopin Ballades
Chopin Scherzos 2 and 3
Mephisto Waltz 1
Beethoven Piano Concerto 3
Schumann Concerto Am
Ginastera Piano Sonata
L'isle Joyeuse
Feux d'Artifice
Prokofiev Sonata Dm

NICE! played very well (sounds like and smells like a Ginastera indeed)
and I like the UMMPPHH  ;D you bring to the 4th!!

Recorded much better than the Chopin with the Radio Shack microphone.
I think  the hunk of bubble gum did its job!!
THANKS.

Nice to hear the Ginastera.  I, too, played it for my undergraduate recital back in....
Not very much in vogue anymore.
I like your straightforward interpretation.  Brilliant but contained.  Especially the 2nd and 3rd movements.
And anyone who can give first aid to a pianoforte with bubblegum must know his business.
