Contrasting Piano Pieces - Audition Repertoire
on: January 25, 2016, 02:21:25 PM
Hello,

For my audition for an English conservatory, I'll need to play two contrasting piano pieces, which cannot exceed (together) a maximum of ten minutes.

I've been desperately trying to think of things to play. I have thought of the standard repertoire; perhaps a movement from a Bach suite alongside a movement from a Beethoven sonata. Others are, admittedly, a little more outlandish. I thought about playing the first five or so minutes of the C-major Piano Concerto of Beethoven, with the orchestral tutti, and then a piano transcription of a short passage from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde - though not necessarily together!

They do not specify that you CANNOT play transcriptions; the only criteria is that they are contrasting pieces that show your talent, ability and potential. My passion is contrapuntal music; the pieces from above composers that are not intrinsically polyphonic have manifold fugato sections. I would not, of course, play two transcriptions; that would be tiresome, and would not showcase my ability to play 'standard' repertoire.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Yours,
C.

i'm a fan of opening w/ a prelude for auditions and multi piece recitals.

how a bout something like this, then use the extra time given to you by this shorter work to showcase a longer contrasting work

or maybe a kapustin prelude and fugue, then antother contrasting work like a transcription  or something
