what fee should i ask
on: December 28, 2004, 02:31:58 PM
hi everybody,
I live in the Netherlands and people ask me to give them lessons.
I think i'm able to give people good lessons (till a certain degree and i would never try to teach young children), but i dont know how many money i should ask for a lesson.
I got lessons from my 4th till my 14th and taught myself later on.
Now im able to play for example the 2th balade from Chopin, but i havent got any certificates.
How much should i ask?
Thanks

Best thing to do is find out what other teachers are getting in the area. Figure out how much you need to be paid for your time in general. Whatever you pass along to your fellowman needs to be balanced with just compensation. If you don't charge enough you won't get respect for your teaching and they won't listen to you in quite the same way. Once you have all the students you want you can increase the fee also. I'm in the U.S. so I have no idea what your economy is like there. In general, whatever professionals get per hour in any endeavor is what you should get for a lesson. Are you doing one hour or half hour lessons? Oh, and get paid in advance by the month.
Good luck

Hi.
I don't know the fees in Netherlands but I'm studying in Finland and here the prizes of pianolessons given by students varie from 10 euro up to 20 euros ( plus taxes) for 45 minutes. I know that for example in France people are ready to pay even more than that, but of course your diplomas have a great influence on the final prize. Asking too little is not too good for appreciation towards our job but asking too much is not fair either for real professionals and especially for your pupils.
You said that you had taught yourself since your 14 th? Have you taken some lessons since then?
How is your estimation of your own skills if you haven't taken lessons since a long time?

thanks eleena and christmascarol,
I've given a piano 'concert' with friends of mine,
I played the 2th balade from chopin, English Suite no.2 from bach, and Etude op.10 no2 from chopin. I got good compliments from people, also from people of the conseratory.
So i havent had any lessons since my 14th, but i think i have enough quality to try giving some lessons.
But i dont have any license or diploma.
Ill probably ask 10 euros for 45 min. Is this a good price?
Thanks,

My piano teacher in UK charges £20 per hour.
That's
28 Euros
or for our American friends, $38
He has Grade 8 ABRSM and a diploma I think.

You don't have an ABRSM grade unless you do their exams!
You can look at their syllabus for grade and diploma exams on
https://www.abrsm.org/?page=exams/index.html
which will give you an idea of their levels.
