Repertoire Suggestion: Encore Piece for Piano Trio

Hi All,

We are planning to play the Mendelssohn Piano Trio in D minor for a concert and am looking for a contrasting and short (fun) piece to end the concert with. Around 3-4 minutes - any ideas?

The trio members (violin, cello and piano) are all made up of conservatorium students and so level is not an issue.

We have only just formed and am also looking for a name… Any ideas on this as well? (music will be only classical and some 20th Century like Piazzolla etc).

The finale of the Mendelssohn Trio is tough to follow in the sense of how awesome it is. Perhaps the Scherzo from Arensky's 1st Trio?

I have found the most effective and enjoyable encores as both a performer and when attending as audience have been for works less common played, a but outside the boc-unorthodox, unexpected, and rememberable.  This checks those boxes. Serves as an aural palet cleanser and is a hummable tune , people can leave the concert w a smile and this little thing stuck in their head

It is a 25 minute recital and the last movement is around 8-9 minutes long - which takes the entire trio to around 27 minutes. So I was hoping to stop at the 3rd movement (which is epic already), and do something shortish at the end.

I really do think that this is a bad idea and not the best way to solve the problem. The Mendelssohn is a tremendously powerful work and to cut out its finale just because you have only 25 minutes available to you would be sacrilege and do both the work and yourselves a disservice. Why not choose a trio that will fit into the allotted span, either on its own or coupled with something shorter? for example, Bridge's second set of Miniatures followed by the same composer's Piano Trio No. 1?

Alternatively, will that extra couple of minutes of so for the Mendelssohn really put it out of reach for the occasion concerned?
