My Grad Audition Repertoire - What do you think?
on: February 20, 2016, 04:20:58 PM
Hi everyone!
I'm auditioning next year for a Masters degree. I haven't decided yet where I'm auditioning, however, I've checked out a few universities to compare audition guidelines and try to prepare a program I can use in all the auditions. This is what I've come up with so far:
J.S. Bach - P&F from WTC - I have yet to choose one. I plan to choose from the ones I already play. I would love to play something like the Italian Concerto but some of the universities require specifically a P&F
Beethoven - Sonata Op. 53 "Waldstein" - I know it's incredibly overplayed but it's the best one I have. Do you think I should learn a new one? Perhaps Op. 7? I'm sticking with Beethoven because the most specific requirement I have read specified it had to be a sonata by Beethoven or Mozart. I do love Mozart but I don't want to play it for an audition.
Brahms - Klavierstucke Op. 119
Berg - Piano Sonata
I'm happy to hear suggestions for everything but particularly for romantic and 20th/21th century!! For romantic I've read several limitations of auditions that require to play works by Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, or Rachmaninov so I'm trying to stick to these guidelines. I'm staying away from Liszt... just in case you wanna suggest him
hehehe
I'm unsure about the Berg but I'm out of ideas. I wanted to play Liebermann's 4th Nocturne but then I'm not sure I'd make the time. Some auditions only require 45 minutes but others require at least an hour worth of music.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this program guys! If you've been through a grad audition yourselves I'd love to know about your experience!
Thanks

If you like Liebermann you could have a look at Four Apparitions, Sonata Notturna, Bruckner Variations or Gargoyles. They are all about 10-15 minutes in length and vary greatly in difficulty.
Or another of his longer Nocturnes.

Thank you for the suggestions alkan2010! What a wonderful sonata. I was familiar with the first two but I had never heard the third one. I'm thinking I may do this or the Gargoyles.
