What should I play next?
on: March 03, 2016, 11:12:17 PM

Hello, everyone.  These are the pieces I am currently working on and am close to perfecting.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of pieces to start learning next.

Chopin-Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2
Debussy-Clair de Lune
Beethoven-Sonata in E Major, Op. 14, No. 1
Mark Hayes-Arrangement of "His Eye is on the Sparrow"

Thank you.

I originally posted this in the performance forum, but thought this might be a better place to try.

If you like Chopin, why not try Op 9 no 1 in Bb minor. It's harder than the one you've played, but not by that much.

If you want another Beethoven sonata try the Pastorale or no. 5 in C minor; they're both a step up from the E major one you did, but again, not that huge a step.

If you want more Debussy, try the Sunken Cathedral, again, a bit harder, but not that much.

And don't avoid Bach. From the things you've played I'd say do a couple of the two part inventions, and then some of the easier P&F from WTC should be doable, C minor, d minor, D major, Ab major from Book I are all approachable.

Bach two part inventions are a joy to play.
As for Beethoven, the Pastorale sonata would be a lovely one.
I'd recommend playing some Chopin mazurkas above all other pieces. Little technical requirements in comparison to the rest and they're lovely pieces.

Just copied this from the performance section to this one.
-------------------------------------------------------
I'd start working on some other Beethoven sonatas like the ones below:

Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1
Piano Sonata No. 10 in G major, Op. 14, No. 2
Piano Sonata No. 25 in G major, Op. 79 (which isn't really as easy as everyone says)

Also, make sure to get a lot of work done on Bach. If you're already familiar with him, try playing some easier Preludes and Fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier like these ones:

Prelude and Fugue No. 6 in D minor, BWV 851 (Book 1)
Prelude and Fugue No. 10 in E minor, BWV 855 (Book 1)
Prelude and Fugue No. 14 in F-sharp minor, BWV 859 (Book 1)
Prelude and Fugue No. 7 in E-flat major, BWV 876 (Book 2)
Prelude and Fugue No. 12 in F minor, BWV 881 (Book 2)
Prelude and Fugue No. 15 in G major, BWV 884 (Book 2)

If you're not so familiar with him yet, the Little Preludes and Fugues, Two and Three-Part Inventions and Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, are a good place to start.

Keep working on that romantic repertoire too, but I'd say Beethoven and Bach are your priority for now. Maybe start looking in to Mozart too. If you'd like to get a grip of the late romantic style, there are plenty of easier Scriabin preludes to look into. Please ask if you'd like me to suggest some.

I hope that help!

BW,

The B Major one from Op.56 is not easy, though.
Beethoven Op 2/2
Chopin Op 20, maybe op 47/38
Debussy Etude 7
Grieg Op 16
Want to do:
Chopin Concerti 1 and 2
Beethoven Waldstein
Ravel Miroirs

Bach will be great to you considering your repertoire! As our fellow said, don't avoid bach.
