...by Gustav Lange... Is anyone familiar with this piece? What do you think of it?   If I what skills would one develop from playing this piece (granted that they are a "basic: intermediate student).  Just curious... ;)

This piece used to be a standard rep favorite of beginner-to-intermediate piano students. Plenty of emotion, but not a terribly challenging piece (i.e., lots of bang for the buck). It was one of the major hits of its day--and it was a very long day! Even now, children may know the melody because the main theme has often been used as the quintessential "I am sad" song on old cartoons. The song also has something of a minor literary history, as you can see here:

The link also has a fairly extensive sound clip of the song (not a MIDI, but an actual performance).

In the interest of full disclosure, I am the Webmaster for the aforementioned site.

Hope this helped!...

Some skills you will need for this piece include voicing the melody against counterpoint and chords, using extended range, rapid change of articulation, nuance dynamics, use of the pedals (damper and possibly the una corda), tempo rubato, jump bass and some arpeggio work.

Not having the score in front of me prohibits a complete list of all skills, but this is what I got from listening to the clip.

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
