Debussy Repertoire
on: April 02, 2016, 06:29:43 PM
Looking for suggestions for another Debussy.

The only piece I have played by him thus far is Clair de Lune.

Here are some of the pieces by him I have listened to and am considering.  I was wondering what the members of the forum had to say.

Ballade
Danse (Tarantelle Stryienne) in E Major
Valse Romantique
Suite Bergamesque Prelude

I listened to a few of the Preludes and Images as well as a think that they are good considerations, but it is hard for me to find ones that I like the sound of.

Have played Bach two part and three part inventions before as well as Clair de Lune, Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2, Beethoven Op. 14, No. 1 (first movement) among other pieces.

Am going to be learning Sonata in C Minor K457 by Mozart and a Bach Prelude and Fugue (maybe G Minor or Ab Major.

I enjoyed learning the prelude from Suite: Pour le piano and this piece can sound very technically impressive, but is much easier than it sounds !  If your good at glissando your love this piece😃

You could learn one of the movements from Children's Corner. Great suite. I highly recommend #4, "The Snow is Dancing", linked below.

I really shouldn't mention this next piece because of it's difficulty, but if you're committed to Debussy like some members of this forum are to Chopin, you might consider Reflets dans l'eau.

Also "Girl with the Flaxen Hair" I think it's from the same suite as Claire De Lune so in the same style I would say for the sound and emotions the piece invokes.

Clair de Lune is from Suite Bergamesque and Girl with the Flaxen Hair is a prelude, but I would second it as an excellent Debussy piece to add to your repertoire. Learning the notes is nowhere near the difficulty of Clair de Lune, but it is a hauntingly beautiful piece when played well.

Since you asked I don't recommend you practice any of these as you are still just getting into the foray of piano.  These pieces you played such as moonlight 1st mov , 9-2 ,et al are the beginners' usual suspects and Clair de lune is one of them we all pretty much learned these to whatever refinement or lack thereof and that is fine you learn these pieces everyone Expects a Clair de lune played to some level but these suggested pieces you mention are more advanced and require a higher level of interpretation and an understanding of working some technical aspects. (Not that Clair de lune doesn't but it is ok)

Prelude Has some tricky aspects to it while most of it is learnable for a late beginner there are some parts that need some advanced foresight into how to handle certain connecting measures
Danse is a beautiful piece I tried learning this one while back and the parts of it aren't too bad but the entirety is incessant enough for me to quit back then you really need to be into this piece to complete.

Ballade I don't recommend you do it is relatively most advanced of the set and valse romantique I have no experience with
I recommend you to get into some real bread and butter czerny Mozart Bach Scarlatti before you get into more Debussy
A beginner artist must learn to do foundation art before doing more Picasso type paintings where going out of the lines one cannot gauge as to intent ( learned and intentional or not skilled enough to stay within lines)

Thanks for the correction I wasn't sure

Hope I didn't come off as a know it all; these happen to be two of the only 3 Debussy pieces I've ever played.  ;D Looking to add another but I can't decide!

I'm a big fan of both arabesques and I found them a similar level to clair de lune. I'd also highly recommend the estampes, they're harder however totally worth it <3

Ask me anything about Debussy. Half the time I can give you a decent answer worth acknowledging. So it is worth the risk.

YES. Play that ballade! It is so beautiful, such a rewarding piece. Perhaps my favorite Debussy composition and he is my 2nd favorite composer too. I would seriously like to see this masterpiece played more. I am starting it as well so we can work on it together if you would like ;)
