Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges. Cadenza Preference in Rach 3
on: April 12, 2016, 04:05:00 AM
Just wondering what version of Rach's 3 cadenza you all preferred in the 1st movement. I used to prefer the ossia cadenza much more due to the darker tonality and more powerful sound. However, I've recently also fallen in love with the regular cadenza and it's toccata-like crispness.

I've been playing through both versions and they each have their own merits and outstanding difficulties.

I like the ossia the most, primarily because of the amazing chordal section and the fact that the one bit near the end of mov. 3 sounds awkward without being foreshadowed in the ossia. It's like everything coming full circle.
