Cadenza Preference in Rach 3
on: April 12, 2016, 04:05:00 AM
Just wondering what version of Rach's 3 cadenza you all preferred in the 1st movement. I used to prefer the ossia cadenza much more due to the darker tonality and more powerful sound. However, I've recently also fallen in love with the regular cadenza and it's toccata-like crispness.

I've been playing through both versions and they each have their own merits and outstanding difficulties.

I like the ossia the most, primarily because of the amazing chordal section and the fact that the one bit near the end of mov. 3 sounds awkward without being foreshadowed in the ossia. It's like everything coming full circle.
