Scriabin, Etude in D-sharp Minor (op. 8/12) (video)
on: April 12, 2016, 02:39:24 PM
This is another recital performance that I converted into a score video about a month ago, and which I was reminded of by another post here.  In the 1988 recital, I played this etude just after the much quieter Etude in C-Sharp Minor (op. 2/1).  I believe Horowitz used to pair the same two etudes.  I wasn't intentionally copying Horowitz, but I was an intense admirer of that pianist, so this may have been a case of subconscious imitation.

This was not a note-perfect performance, and I was no virtuoso, but I think I captured the fiery Romanticism and dramatic spirit of the piece.

holy CRAP! This (excuse my language) badASS! Is this the same performance from your soundcloud? I'm pretty sure I enjoyed that one too. You play Scriabin just the way I like it: demonically.

Yes, this was from the same recital as the Soundcloud version.  It's funny that you use the adverb "demonically," because when I listen to a couple of those old recital tapes today, it sounds to me almost as if I was in some kind of a trance.

Thanks visitor.  My hat is off to you and anyone else who tackles this daunting but beautiful piece!  I agree with the other posters who suggested that you should work it up again and share your new interpretation here.

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
