in her eyes - (and literal notating of rubato)
on: April 23, 2016, 07:05:00 PM
Hi gang.
This piece, 'in her eyes' for piano,  became an experiment to exactly notate a rubato and asynchronous playing - so that it would fit into an unwavering click track when played back by a machine - (sibelius).  The phrasing conforms to the down beat consistently, and played that way.. yet the give and take of rubato is calculated for in ways that wouldn't 'read' too complexly..
I decided to do this, because the rubato i felt for this piece was too precise to just leave it to the interpreter (should i be so lucky) by just indicating a suggestion of rubato… So i calculated it out.
Ronde, and Ted had brought up this complexity of trying to notate scores 'suchly', and would agree with them that this is mostly a difficult (and unnecessary, mostly) thing to do, because the idea of rubato is something that just comes naturally, as it is applied… But this piece wanted something very specific.
So, I offer the score, and the performance by the machine, for you to judge how effective my attempt was at conjugating the small polyrhythmic cells.  The sound sample could be better for sure, but this experiment was about the rhythm
I do have a live version of me playing it, which i may post later, … but i am curious about feedback to this idea.. trying to humanize (rhythmically) the  machine
Thank you for listening and considering this idea.
