How are you supposed to crescendo this?

It's whole notes... You can't really crescendo whole notes. The genre is jazz if that changes anything.

Its expexted you are comping or improvising using the chord as the underlying harmony.  As you play play the rhythm section pattern or make up as you go along are are gradually cresc.
