Gigantic pieces - help me decide
on: May 19, 2016, 09:03:48 PM
Dear all,
I'm on the brink of deciding to learn a large scale piece for my final undergraduate recital (June 2017)
I'm looking at three works in particular
Godowsky- Sonata in e minor
Dukas- Sonata in e-flat minor
Reger- Variations and a fugue on a theme by Telemann
I love them all and I can't decide! I've asked my teacher and he's quite impartial and is happy for me to do any of them, although he was most interested by Godowsky.
I'm interested to hear of your opinions of these pieces!
Thanks

All great pieces and I wish I had time to learn any of them properly. My gut feeling for a young player (it's all relative but you're a lot younger than me if you're at conservatoire) is the Dukas, but really you'll have lots of fun and rewarding times with any of the three. Good luck!

I hadn't thought about that so much; but I agree that Dukas is probably the most fresh and youthful.
Having given Dukas another listen, it's the top of the 3 so far, but I'll give it another week or so before committing.
Still happy to hear other people's opinions!

The Godowsky is the least familiar, despite Godowsky's work as a whole being far more widely known today than was once the case. It's quite a challenge - but then so are the other two works that you mention! - and it's the longest of the three but, if you can manage it, you should be onto a winner!
Good luck.
Best,
Alistair
