New Piano Market Statistics: Inside the Quiet Transformation of Piano Playing

For those of us who spend our lives on the bench — whether teaching, practicing for a recital, or simply playing for the love of it – the piano has always been a singular concept: wood, felt, strings, and soul. Yet, recent global market reports reveal that the definition of our instrument is expanding and evolving in ways that affect us all. Read more

Backstage pianists

Yo does anyone have any videos or stories of famous pianists backstage losing their sh*t cause of nerves, or competely owning the moment?

Some dude posted a video of Argerich freaking out before a performance in a thread asking about how to deal with nerves and I thought it was really cool

That was probably me. (Not a dude here but everyone seems to call me that.)

I don't know any other videos etc that would cater to your interests (and neither do I think it's cool) but Stephen Hough does a lot of writing on various issues for press and for himself. He's a brilliant and witty writer, great guy to chat with and obviously a brilliant pianist. Maybe he'll have some writings on backstage nerves. I can't find any at present as his writing is littered all over the internet and not just his website; I've also tried looking for an old article he wrote about how he demands above all a clean piano keyboard and brings a cloth with him onstage to scrub at the keys between movements. I can't find that either.

And yes, he's gay and Catholic. Homophobes go away.

Why is that cool?

Cause I feel like a lot of times we forget that the pianists we see on stage are normal ass people and it's cool to see their pre concert rituals and how they deal with the situations they're in before they kill it on stage.

Or just watching them completely freak out back stage then change their demeanor in a second is pretty awesome to watch (Martha Argerich)
