Hi guys,

So, I've mostly been working on three violin sonatas (I posted the C major here before) the past few months, but I've put them aside for now to get some work done on two piano trio's in C major and E minor.

I've only come so far with this E minor one, and I find it very hard to balance the instruments right, mostly on the parts where the piano is playing the melodie and the left hand is accompanying. At those moments I'm not sure what to do with the strings and, in particular, the cello.

So please give me some feedback.

BW,
Marijn

Hi again,

So no one responded yet, but I thought I'd post this update anyway. I'm having a little trouble what to do with the transition to the second theme. Anyway, would be nice I anyone gave some feedback.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Marjin,

You are an amazing composer! I like the overall mood of the piece and the going of it. I wish I can hear it from real instruments :)

If we could have the score of the piece, it would be easier to make suggestions...
If you are doing sonata form, then you can go to G major, but that would be a little boring. With that fast of a tempo, I don't think you are expressing enough mournfulness of E minor. I think you need to put a small slow section in E minor, then transition to C major as your 2nd theme (because E minor wants to go to C major, naturally) without any modulations. It will have a really cool effect.

For example, you can do

Hi guys,

My newest update on this composition, even though almost nobody responds. What do you think of it. I made it until the end of the second subject group, now a little coda will come and then the exposition will be done.

I really enjoy this piece. I've listened a couple of times but did not respond because I'm not knowledgeable enough in composition and my theory is too rusty to offer help or suggestions. Then I decided I should at least let you know how much I like it. :) Very nice work!

Thanks! I use Finale 2014.5. Usually when I listen to my music being played back with their software it sounds like I wrote crappy music, but I'll just convince myself that it has to sound better with real instruments!

Btw, here is the new update from today. I changed E minor to G minor. It suits the technical aspects of the strings better. I also composed a first draft of the coda and transition back to the beginning of the exposition.

Ahh Finale... I can't afford that lol

I liked the E minor one better, because I like E minor (the only reason I looked at this thread) but sure, G minor is fine :) Just don't make it like G# Minor please, then I won't be able to play it

Very nice. I'm hearing a lot more originality in this one, especially compared to your E flat trio ;)
Can't wait to hear more! I liked it in E minor, but I think it actually works well in G minor as well.

Wow, this has almost been a year ago. I picked up working on this piece a few days ago again. Switched it back to the original E minor and changed some things. I also started composing the development section.
